Finding God's Presence ~ Life Goes On

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

I've heard it said that life goes on.
And so it does.

I rested beneath our aged apple tree. Just a few months ago it stood stark against a gray winter's sky. Bare limbs stretched toward heaven, yearning for spring. A severe and necessary pruning had created sharp angular gaps in its beautiful linear silhouette - gaping holes interrupting the tree's canopy.

Would the gaping holes always be there?

Would the sharp angular gaps continue to interrupt the linear flow of this once beautiful tree?

It would seem so.

But now, as I rest beneath the apple tree on this bright May morning several months later, signs and sounds all about the tree proclaim life. Fresh sprouts testifying of growth, shoot from the sharp, drastic cuts of winter. Blossoms abound. Birds sing their praise. The branches clap their hands in the gentle breeze.

Yes, life goes on.

Especially a life that encounters sharp, drastic cuts, standing exposed and vulnerable beneath a darkened sky.

Life goes on.

Especially a life surrendered and dependent on the Lord her Maker.

Out of the sharp, drastic cuts comes new, fruitful growth. Out of the gaping holes in the heart, God's mercy flows, creating a complete canopy of love that  shelters and heals the hurt.

When we need God the most, that's when He is the nearest. Like the life-giving sap flowing through the limbs of the apple tree, God's Spirit flows through His child preserving and maintaining life.

He is there during the broken times.
He is there during the pruning times.
He there during the fruitful times.
He is there. Always.

Life goes on.

"I would have lost heart,
unless I had believed that I would see
the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Wait on the Lord;
Be of good courage,
and He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord!"
Psalm 27:13-14

Where is God? Sunday Glimpses

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

Life is hard Lord, but You are faithful. Your goodness and Truth overflow into the lives of Your children, setting us free from all that has wounded us. Thank You. Thank You for Your grace, Your mercy. Thank You for your warm embrace when our hearts bleed and our minds panic. I find so much comfort and reassurance in Your Presence. It's so wonderful to know I'm not alone.

I want my friends to walk in that assurance also, Lord. I ask that You open their eyes to see You in their midst. Open their ears to her Your sweet whispers deep in their spirits. Awaken their hearts to recognize Your Secret Place - that place reserved for Your child beneath the shadow of Your wing. Safe. Secure. Soothed. Bless You Lord.

What an honor it is to serve You Lord. What a blessing it is to know You. You are Wonderful. Counselor. The Mighty God and our Prince of Peace. You, Lord, are our everything. We love You Lord, and we give You praise.

Finding God's Presence ~ God's Waiting Room

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

Guest Blogger, Alice Wisler   @AliceWisler

I haven't had the honor of meeting Alice Wisler in person, but I can already tell that I would love her. She is a fellow author with Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas. Alice's message about waiting on God is powerful in a very tender and compelling way. Waiting is hard, isn't it? And sometimes trusting while we're waiting is even harder. I'm praying that Alice's message will touch your spirit and give you strength for the journey as you wait on Him.

Welcome Alice!

But those who wait on the Lord
shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings as eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV)

I used to think that the person who would do all of this soaring in the sky was doing it AFTER his waiting was over. So as a waiter, I sat and hoped and prayed.  Weary, I read how one day I would run and walk without the burdens of wondering and waiting.

The other night as I sat under a crescent moon on my porch stoop, I saw it all differently.

Now.

Because although we do have to wait, and often painfully long, God is a God of now.

He is calling us to live now.

Even in our waiting, He doesn’t go on vacation or cease to listen to our cries or leave His throne.

He grows us.

We grow while we wait.

In fact, my waiting has produced some of the best growth and spiritual character. In spite of waiting I can still live today.  I can still experience joy and contentment (as the Apostle Paul wrote of).  I am learning in the waiting room of God. I cling to Him. I have also felt the needs of His people, praying often for others who must wait, dear friends old and new who have asked me to pray for their really tough circumstances.

Last night I promised God that when He answered one of my prayers in this waiting room, that I would not feel as though I was done with needing Him or trusting Him. I promised that I would not grow cocky or overly proud or think I had accomplished anything.  I told Him that I would still love Him, still seek His face, and still know desperately that I need Him.  Always.  And that I can do no good thing without Him. I told Him I would never want what He has taught me to be taken away from me.

I felt as though the clouds of my mind had parted. It was a growth spurt.

Today, as I was going about my usual writing and wondering when God was going to act, I received a wonderful surprise. I received an answer. I was given a writing assignment from a publishing house to write for them! I rejoiced. I wanted to run, to soar.

Hallelujah! At last!

Happy, I was eager to celebrate with a hunk of chocolate or drink that special tea. God had heard my cry, God provided me with work!

But the truth is, this is not my first time to have to cling to God and wait nor will it be my last. I still have other areas of my life to wait over.

Yet this time around, instead of wanting to hurry up the wait or push it aside or hold my breath until it leaves, I'm learning that waiting upon God is not at all ONLY a season. The truth is, it is a way of life.

Before I thought once my prayer was answered, I could kick up my heels and I'd be done with waiting. (I used to be young once and I think youthful minds think this way.)

Now I see the value in waiting, the beauty in growing, the honesty of a cultivated-by-God heart.

Dear God, I am your servant.  I belong to you.
And I wait.
Because you are a God worth waiting for.

Take a look at Alice's work:

Written in devotional format, Getting Out of Bed in the Morning is a companion for those going through sorrow associated with loss—whether brought to the journey through the death of a loved one, failing health, job loss, broken relationships, or weakened family ties. Losses are real and raw; they often make people want to give up, quit trying. Yet, as readers discover how their circumstances can be used to lift hands to God, and in time reach others, they will see how God can use them to be people of encouragement and find beauty once again in a life worth living.

Finding God's Presence ~ Weaving Together Broken Twigs

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

Grapevines twirled and curled, draping the birdhouse in protective camouflage. A sparrow darted in and out of the circular opening, broken twigs dangling from her beak.

Carefully she selected each piece, recognizing its role in her new dwelling place. I loved her persistence. Her determination. Her sense of purpose.

And I loved how the sparrow understood that her Heavenly Father would help her weave those broken twigs together to make a place of comfort for her family.

Do I understand like the sparrow Lord? Completely? Do I understand that it is You who makes me lie down in peace because You are with me? Do I really understand that it is You who lines my path with glimmering gold, purified in the Refiner's Fire? And that it is You who uses all the broken places in my life to weave a tapestry where I may lie down in Your Presence, beneath the shadow of Your wing?

Do I really understand this deep in my knower?

I want to.

Please help me Lord.

And please help my friends too.

"How lovely is Your tabernacle, O Lord of Hosts!
My soul longs, yes, even faints
for the courts of the Lord;
My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young - even Your altars,
O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in Your house.
They will still be praising You. Selah."
~ Psalm 84:1-4

Where is God? Sunday Glimpses

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

Father, matters of the heart are so difficult. Complex. Layers of emotions that consume me. I'm thankful You are the Master of my heart. You Lord, are my Healer. I ask that You pour the Healing Balm of Gilead over and through my broken places. I want to be whole again - complete in You. I want to be a vessel for Your glory. Use me Lord. Mold me. Shape me into the woman You need me to be.

I ask that You heal the hearts of my friends also. Where there is sorrow, bring joy. Where there is bitterness, bring forgiveness. For their fear, bring courage and peace. Thank You for Your grace Lord. It truly is amazing and beautiful. Your grace has sustained me and given me the strength to go on. For that I am so very thankful.

You are an awesome God, full of wonder, mighty in power, tender in Your love. Thank You for being our God. Our hearts belong to You and for that we give You praise.
