"Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him."
(1 John 3:1)
Yes! What manner of love the Father has bestowed on us!
Love beyond our comprehension.
Love too magnificent to measure.
Love undeserved.
What is the reason He bestowed His gift of love upon us? "That we should be called children of God!" What does this mean?
Called, kaleo (kal-eh-oh) means "to invite or summon." Kaleo is God's "call to participate in the blessings of the Kingdom." (Spirit Filled Life Study Bible commentary)
As children of God we have a rich inheritance which are the blessings to the Kingdom: peace that passes all understanding, joy unspeakable, cleansing of sin resulting in new birth, new life, new beginnings...
In Romans 9:25 & 26, Paul quotes Hosea 2:23 and Hosea 1:10 from the Old Testament when explaining that Jesus came for the Gentiles, as well as the Jews: "'I will call them My people, who were not My people, and her beloved, who was not beloved.' And it shall come to pass in the place where it was said to them, 'You are not My people,' there they shall be called sons of the Living God.'"
Don't you love it? The Old Testament supporting the New...a shared covenant between the Jews and Christians. God's Word is wonderful.
"What manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called the children of God!"
Indeed.
Lord, Thank You for calling us Your children. What an enormous blessing this is - an undeserved blessing of love. Help us to walk in Your love. Help us to take Your light into the dark places around us. Help us to realize that You loved us even before we acknowledged Your Presence on this earth. That is amazing. Forgive me for when I take this knowledge for granted. I love You. May I be a blessing to You, my Father.
