Finding His Presence ~ Overcomer

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

Life comes at us hard sometimes, doesn't it? Difficulties know no age, no color, no gender. Difficulties show no respect for active faith. If anything, the fires of difficulty seem to burn hotter for those of us who implement active faith.

I'm experiencing a personal crisis that has just about done me in...but God. Don't you love that? But God is with me and He is for me and in that alone I find the strength to go on. A friend sent me something from L. B. Cowman's devotional, Streams in the Desert. This passage encouraged me to see purpose in what I was going through - purpose on an eternal scale. I want to share it with you.

"Imagine going to the mountains of Lebanon during the reign of Israel's great king Solomon. Can you see the majestic cedar? It is the pride of all the other trees and has wrestled many years with the cold north winds! The summer sun has loved to smile upon it, while the night has caused its soft leaves to glisten with drops of dew. Birds have built their nests in its branches, and weary travelers and wandering shepherds have rested in its shade from the midday heat or taken shelter from the raging storms. And suddenly we realize that this old inhabitant of the forest has been doomed to fall victim to the woodsman's ax!

"We watch as the ax makes its first gash on the cedar's gnarled trunk. Then we see its noble limbs stripped of their branches as the tree comes crashing to the ground. We cry out against the wanton destruction of this 'Tree of God,' as it is distinctively known, and express our anger over the demolition of this proud pillar in the forest temple of nature...

"We should not be so quick to complain but should follow the gigantic tree as the workmen of 'Hiram, king of Tyre' (2 Chronicles 2:3) take it down the mountainside. From there we should watch it being sailed on rafts along the blue water of the Mediterranean. And finally, we should behold it being placed as a glorious and polished beam in the temple of God. As you contemplate its final destination, seeing it in the Holy of Holies as a jewel in the diadem of the almighty King, can you honestly complain that this 'crown jewel of Lebanon' was cut down, removed from the forest, and placed in such a noble setting? The cedar had once stood majestically in nature's sanctuary, but 'the glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house' (Haggai 2:9)."

Isn't that beautiful? I'm reminded of Revelation 3:12, "He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name."

I want to be an overcomer. I want to be a pillar in His temple - someone who selflessly undergirds the work of the Kingdom from now until forever. I want to dwell in the courts of the Lord, to bask in His Presence, to reflect His glory in the polished wood of my difficulty.

I want you to be an overcomer too. I know you can do it...with Him.

"'Not by might, nor by power,
but by My Spirit,' saith the Lord of hosts."
~ Zechariah 4:6

Finding His Presence ~ The Gift of His Song

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

I awoke with the dawn. In the blurred haze between twilight and the sun's morning nod, a symphony of songbirds heralded God's faithful light.

The Spirit called to me. I tried to shush Him, but He persisted. With a slight groan I shuffled to the coffeepot and found my way to our porch swing. I curled my legs under me, pulled my robe tighter, and closed my eyes. The melody of the birds was ethereal. Peaceful. My thoughts quieted. My shoulders relaxed. I breathed in God's Presence.

Yes, with desperation, I breathed in God's Presence. His strength. His peace. His comfort.

Several crows swooped in and perched in the top of our century-old Juniper. Like the shrill whistle of a train, mocking caws interrupted my morning symphony. The songbirds perched quietly. Watching. Waiting - waiting for the invading cacophony to end their intrusive noise.

Lord, please send the crows away. I need to hear Your song in my night.

Rocking quietly, I leaned into the back of the swing thinking about God's faithfulness, recognizing the enemy's intrusion into His song - my song.

"Crows, leave in Jesus' Name, " I spoke into the growing light of dawn, aiming my authority at the audacity of the crows to interrupt my gift from heaven. The caws ceased. Black silhouettes lifted into the dawn and flew away.

Like the gentle swell of an ocean's wave, my symphony continued and peace resumed.

"Therefore submit to God.
Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you."
~ James 4:7,8a

Where Is God? Sunday Glimpses

by Nan Jones  @NanJonesAuthor

I need You, Lord. I need the warmth of Your embrace, the shelter of Your Presence. I offer a sacrifice of praise to You in the midst of my storm, for You alone are worthy of our praise. You are Wonderful. Counselor. Mighty God, and the Prince of Peace. You are my God, my Redeemer, and my Friend. Hold me close enough to hear Your beating heart, close enough to feel the rise and fall of Your breath. I can't do this alone, Lord. You are my strength, my shelter, my sure place. I love You Lord. Many of my friends are overwhelmed also. Open their ears that they might hear Your sweet whisper calling to them out of the darkness. Give them strength. Hope. Affirmation that they are worthy of Your love. Help them, as You have me, to live in the moment knowing that You are in the moment with us. Thank You Lord. I would be lost without You. Thank You for loving me. Blessed be Your holy Name.

Finding His Presence ~ One Solitary Rose

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

The rosebush grew neglected in a thicket of underbrush. Chaos wrapped around its base while vines climbed and choked its branches with invasive tendrils. Devouring evidence of passing Japanese beetles pierced its tender leaves.

The rosebush was neglected. Broken. Choked by invading vines, and yet it bloomed.

One solitary rose.

The bloom stemmed from its base, near the roots where life was sustained. Petals of pink velvet peeked out from the chaos and declared who she is.

I want to be like that. No matter what destruction comes my way, what heartbreak, or utter chaos, I want to stretch out from my roots - my strong foundation - and show forth the glory of God.

I want to declare who I am - a daughter of the Most High God.

"I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness,
and will hold your hand;
I will keep you and give you as a covenant to the people,
as a light to the Gentiles, to open blind eyes,
to bring out prisoners from the prison,
those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
I am the Lord, that is My name;
And my glory I will not give to another..."
~Isaiah 42:6-8

Finding His Presence ~ When Day is Dimming

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

For those of you who are finding themselves in a difficult place - an unexpected crumbling of your world, a heartbreak beyond description, terminal illness...whatever it may be - know this: Our God is faithful. He is the sure place in an ever-changing world. He loves you with magnificent love. He surrounds and protects you with mighty power.

This I know.

Still, My Soul, Be Still
by Keith and Kristyn Getty

Still, my soul be still,
And do not fear
Though winds of change may rage tomorrow.
God is at your side,
No longer dread
The fires of unexpected sorrow.

God, You are my God!
And I will trust in You and not be shaken.
Lord of peace renew
A steadfast spirit within me
To rest in You alone.

Still, my soul be still.
Do not be moved
By lesser lights and fleeting shadows.
Hold onto His ways
With shield of faith
Against temptations flaming arrows.

God, You are my God!
And I will trust in You and not be shaken.
Lord of peace renew
A steadfast spirit within me
To rest in You alone.

Still, my soul be still.
Do not forsake
The Truth you learned in the beginning.
Wait upon the Lord
And hope will rise
As stars appear when day is dimming.

God, You are my God!
And I will trust in You and not be shaken.
Lord of peace renew
A steadfast spirit within me
To rest in You alone...

I'll rest in You alone.

Where Is God? Sunday Glimpses

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

Lord, I am comforted by Your Presence. I know that Your Spirit is within me because of Jesus, but it comforts and strengthens me to realize that You are also with me, surrounding me with Your love. That is an amazing thought. That is how I can run to You in my time of need and Your power is not limited or contained within my frailties. Thank You for teaching me this truth. Thank You for teaching me that it is in You that we live and move and have our being. Amazing. Simply amazing. I pray for my friends who feel alone in their struggles. I ask that You open their eyes to see You there with them. Stir within them the reality that we can, indeed, run to You and be held in Your comforting embrace. Calm their restless spirits. According to Your covenant, I ask that You exchange their fears for Your perfect peace, Your joy for their immense sorrows. Make a way for them where there seems to be no way. Thank You for Your faithfulness, Lord. Thank You for Your mercy and love. You are the Mighty God, Maker of heaven and earth, and yet You know us by Name. Hold my friends close, Lord and remind them that they belong to an awesome God. Thank You Lord. We love You and we give You praise.

Finding His Presence ~ Stepping Through the Heavens

by Nan Jones  @NanJonesAuthor

I stood in the cool of the evening, in the shadows of the setting sun. It felt good just to breathe. To be still. To remember that He is God.

My shoulders relaxed as I tilted my head back and looked toward the heavens. A river of coral flowed through the sky. The clouds punctuated the dusk like staccato notes in a beautiful melody. But the clouds weren't scattered about. Though punctuated, they flowed in the shape of a winding path.

I was clearly reminded of the scripture in Nahum* that describes the clouds as the dust of the Lord's feet. I could picture Him stepping through the heavens along the winding coral path. I could picture Him coming to me in my time of need.

I cried out to the Lord my God,

"Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me!
For my soul trusts in You;
And in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge,
until these calamities have passed by."
~ Psalm 57:1

And there on the edge of our bank I felt Him draw near. His Presence surrounded me. Comforted me.

Gave me peace.

Scriptures of Encouragement ~ Hovering at Full Throttle

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

The sweet nectar beckons to the hummingbird. He hovers, his internal engine sounding at full throttle. Bowing his head, he laps from the sugary goodness my hand has provided as sunlight glistens on his ruby red breastplate.

The hummingbirds anticipate the nectar I provide for them. They bob and dart about with delight when it's time to feed. Even after a long cold winter, the little hummers remember where to find the nectar come spring. I anticipate their arrival as much as they look forward to my provision.

The Lord is like this. Anticipating our arrival, I mean.

Especially after long, cold winters of the soul.

Psalm Nineteen refers to the Word of God - His commandments and judgments - as being sweeter than the honey in the honeycomb. Perfect nutrition. Perfect life-sustaining properties. A delight for the weary, parched spirit.

Oh that we would hover at full throttle over His Word and drink deeply of His love.

Hovering. Bowing. Feasting at His table.

"O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary
to see Your power and Your glory."
~ Psalm 63:1-2

Selah...pause and think about it.

Where Is God? Sunday Glimpses

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

Lord, You are so mighty and good. You've reminded me of Your sweet name all morning...Jesus...Jesus. What is it about Your name, Lord? At the mention of Your name my spirit calms, my enemies flee. At the mention of Your name I know that I know I am not alone. That's amazing, Lord. Thank You. Thank You for Your Presence. Thank You for Your Spirit within. I feel safe in Your Presence. Secure. My anxiety leaves. My quiet pain diminishes and I know that I am loved by a magnificent God. I want the same for my friends. I implore You, Lord to open their eyes to see You, especially when they feel abandoned. I pray that the conversation You and I share will tug at their heartstrings and draw them to You. Shed Your grace and Your peace abroad within their hearts. Quiet their restless spirits. Hear their buried cries and let them know Your love, for it is a beautiful love. A complete love. A healing love. Hold my friends close, Lord. Shield them from the works of the enemy and restore to them the joy of their salvation. Thank You for Your mercy. Thank You for Who You are and for calling us Your own. We love You, Lord.

Scriptures of Encouragement ~ The Way of Love

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

The Lord spoke deeply in my spirit this morning. I want to share it with you:

"If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don't love, I'm nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate.

"If I speak God's Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, 'Jump,' and it jumps, but I don't love, I'm nothing.

"If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don't love, I've gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I'm bankrupt without love.

"Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn't want what it doesn't have.
Love doesn't strut.
Doesn't have a swelled head,
Doesn't force itself on others,
Isn't always 'me first,'
Doesn't fly off the handle,
Doesn't keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn't revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back, but keeps going to the end.

"Love never dies. Inspired speech will be over some day; praying in tongues will end; understanding will reach its limit. We know only a portion of the truth, and what we say about God is always incomplete. But when the Complete arrives, our incompletes will be canceled.

"When I was an infant at my mother's breast, I gurgled and cooed like any infant. When I grew up, I left those infant ways for good.

"We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!

"But for right now until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love." ~ 1 Corinthians 13, The Message

Father, What a mighty God You are. Thank You for Your compassion, Your mercy, Your faithfulness and love. You amaze me as You surround me with Your Presence - that place of rest and comfort. Teach us to love with Your love, not the love the world knows and acts upon. Help us to love fully with a holy love. Strengthen us to do Your bidding in this world of pain. Strengthen us to walk in grace and mercy. Thank You Lord. Thank You for writing these words upon our hearts. We love You and give You praise.

Scriptures of Encouragement ~ Be At Rest

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

Come to Me, My precious child,
Come to Me and rest.
Your heart is heavy. Tired. Worn.
Come lean upon My breast.

Peace abides with Me, My child;
Assurance. Comfort. Calm.
Run to Me, call out My name,
Receive your healing balm.

This passage wide before you lies,
Tumultuous waves unfurl.
But never forget I hold your hand
Though anguish around doth swirl.

I'll part the raving sea for you,
I'll lead you on dry land.
Your enemies I will swallow up,
But you must hold fast my hand.

Look to Me sweet child of mine,
Look deep into My eyes.
I see your pain, your angst, your tears,
I hear your buried cries.

Do not wander left nor right,
But steady your heart on Me.
For surely My grip is tight on you,
So My face alone you see.

Beauty from ashes, life from death,
My covenant exchange endures.
Come to Me, My precious child,
My love, My peace assures.

"Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed;
He will answer him from His holy heaven
with the saving strength of His right hand."
~ Psalm 20:6

God's love is steadfast. He can reach you on your highest mountain. He runs to you in your lowest valley, pursuing you with His great love. I pray for you sweet friend. You are not alone in your struggle. The Lord our God is with you. Open your heart and let Him in.

Where Is God? Sunday Glimpses

by Nan Jones  @NanJonesAuthor

Lord God, You are so good. You are so faithful. Your tender mercies rain on us with each new day. Thank You, Lord. Thank You for teaching me these truths. Life is SO hard at times. It overwhelms. Suffocates. Confuses. But yet, there You are Lord. Steady. Calm. Faithful. Oh Lord, open our eyes that we might see. Enlighten our hearts that we might understand the height and the depth, the length and the width of Your great love. It simply astounds me. Many of my friends are struggling with overwhelming circumstances. I bring them before Your throne of grace, and as we bow before You I ask that You would touch them with an abundance of Your grace. Pour the oil of gladness over them. Help them to anticipate beauty from the destruction because You, Lord, are faithful to work all things together for our good when we love You and are called according to Your purposes. You are precious, Lord. You are our strong tower, our shelter in the storm. Thank You for claiming us as Your own. We love You and we give You praise.

Scriptures of Encouragement ~ Indigo Splendor

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

Phoenix Mountain rose in the distance, shrouded by a cloak of morning clouds. Its appearance was majestic. Regal. Indigo splendor with shades of purple beckoned to me from beneath the foggy mist, drawing my thoughts to the Lord. I knew this was a God-moment.

God was reminding me of His Presence.

The past few weeks have been tumultuous and laden with anxiety as the son of a dear friend fought for his life. An aggressive staff infection invaded Jake's foot and ultimately his entire body. Prayers like a summer storm rained at the foot of the cross on his behalf. A battle ensued - I'm sure of it. But our God prevailed. Jake is coming home this week.

The clouds on the mountaintop captured my attention. I pressed the Lord for understanding.

God answered, reminding me that Moses met with Him on a cloudy mountain.

"Then Moses went up into the mountain,
and a cloud covered the mountain.
Now the glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day
He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud."
~ Exodus 24:15-16

The purpose for the meeting was for God to instruct Moses on the building of the tabernacle, a holy place for the indwelling Spirit of God. In fact, on the mountain God told Moses, "And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them" (Exodus 25:14).

God pursued His children with His love. He desperately wanted to be in relationship with them but could not dwell or live among them because He was holy and they were not, thus the need for the Tabernacle.

God still pursues His children with His love. In our mountain of difficulties He wants us to open our eyes to behold Him. He wants us to walk closely with Him - close enough to recognize His Presence.

Are you climbing a mountain of difficulty? Is your world crumbling or spinning out of control?

Life is full of pinnacles - mountains that loom before us. But the bigger the mountain, the higher it reaches to the heavens, providing us a place to dwell richly with the Lord.

And the clouds that shroud us from the sunlight making our world dark? Could it be that God is in the darkness too? The Scripture said, "He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud." I believe He calls to us from the midst of the clouds too.

Perhaps it's in the clouds high on our mountains that we behold His glory, for He is with us.

Always.

Scriptures of Encouragement ~ God Currents

by Nan Jones   @NanJonesAuthor

"For the God on the mountain is still God in the valley,
When things go wrong, He'll make it right.
And the God of the good times is still God in the bad times,
The God of the day, is still God of the night...

"The God of the day, is still God of the night."

Voices echoed through the small sanctuary, bouncing across the light shafts filtering through the open windows. The congregation stood spontaneously to sing this declaration of faith. Many hands lifted as an offering of praise.

To the right of the altar, piles of bags filled with clothing shared the space with multiple boxes of food gathered for a local homeless shelter. It was impossible to sing the song of God's faithfulness without thoughts of these hurting, destitute people wandering through our minds.

Tonight was the night we would deliver the abundant blessings to the shelter.

I thought about the love of God - how it flows through His children, how His love is like a current on which His Spirit rides.

Wandering thoughts of these precious people flowed on the current of His love.

Sacrificial giving of clothes and food flowed on the current of His love.

Spending an evening with the homeless offering hugs, breaking bread, sharing Jesus ALL flowed on the current of His love.

"But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him
a fountain of water springing up
into everlasting life." ~ John 4:14

What an honor it is to allow our fountain of Living Water to overflow into the lives of others! The current of His love cascades over and through the broken pieces of lives bringing hope and restoration. The current of His love refreshes, encourages, and quenches the fiercest of thirsts.

We are the channel through which God's current of love flows. Are we willing?
