Scriptures of Encouragement ~ A Blue Exclamation Point

A flash of blue grabbed my attention. My eyes followed the indigo blur to the top of charcoal-colored branches, skeletons against the winter gray sky. It was a bluebird, of all things. Yes! In the dead of winter a bluebird graced me with his presence along my afternoon walk.

I was feeling a little down today. The gray of the sky mimicked my mood. I was talking with the Lord when this little gift of heaven flew past. I stopped and smiled. I knew the Lord was reminding me that He is the One True God, Maker of heaven and earth, and yet He knows me by name - He knew I needed to smile.

In the old testament, God instructed the Israelites to build His dwelling place - the tabernacle - with colorful embellishments of blue, purple, and scarlet. These were the colors that would draw their attention to Him: Blue would remind them of the heavens, the dwelling place of the One True God; purple would remind them of His royalty as the King of kings; and scarlet would remind them of the atoning sacrifice of blood that would wash His children in forgiveness. In many ways, my walks beneath the mountain forest canopy is like a tabernacle for me. I meet God there and I am forevermore reminded of His Presence. Today, the flash of blue served as an exclamation point.

As I watched the blue-feathered blessing with my head tilted back and my eyes lifted toward heaven, I noticed something else. The flannel gray clouds were moving swiftly across the sky. Behind them, as if in layers, I could see clear, blue sky - a blue that reflected in the wings of the bluebird, a blue that pointed to the One True God, Maker of heaven and earth.

Wind splashed against my face. I thought of the Spirit of God as a mighty rushing wind showing Himself strong on my behalf, moving the dismal gray clouds out of my focus and replacing them with the glorious knowledge that He is God and nothing is too difficult for Him.

"Israel, no other god is like ours
the clouds are His chariot
as He rides across the skies to come and help us.
The eternal God is our hiding place;
He carries us in His arms."
~ Deuteronomy 33:26,27a (The Contemporary English Version)

The bluebird thrust his head back and sang a song of praise. The flannel gray clouds moved a little faster and the magnificent blue sky broke through its dismal veil.

After all, He is God alone.
