I Have Called You Friend

"For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end."
(Hebrews 3:14)

I have returned to this Scripture three times today and finally I said, "Okay, Lord. I give." Now, to find out what He wants to show us...

The first thing that jumps out at me is the 'if' word. I have studied the Scriptures long enough to know that this little word carries a lot of weight. What is its purpose in this verse? "For we have become partakers of Christ IF we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end."

IF we hold - adhere to, cherish, cleave, cling to - our confidence in Christ, steadfast through ALL things, THEN it can be said that we have become PARTAKERS of Jesus Christ. IF!

Whew! That's a mouthful, but chew it slowly. This is a very important statement concerning us.

What does it mean to be a partaker of Christ? In Greek, the word for partakers is metochos (met-okh-oss) meaning "a participant, associate, partner, companion." To me, this screams relationship!

If we are to become a partaker of Christ we must realize that our faith is much more than a one-time experience. As glorious as our moment of salvation may have been, it doesn't stop there. There is so much more.

Becoming a partaker of Christ requires relationship.
It requires endurance.
It requires understanding that not only is He God of the mountaintop, but He is God in the valley, as well.

Becoming a partaker of Christ means loving and trusting Him, even though...

Steadfast. Unwavering faith.

And what is the reward? The reward is becoming a companion of Jesus, not just an acquaintance or benefactor, but a companion, a friend.

Jesus said, "I have called you friend." (John 15:15)

Imagine that...

Lord, This is such a precious Truth to take hold of. Above all, You desire relationship with us. You desire companionship, friendship. Wow!! I am humbled by this. I know that a friend loves at all times. That's the kind of friend I want to be for You. A faithful friend...to the end. Bless You, Lord.
