The Name!

"O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your Name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!"
(Psalm 8:1)

Lord, how EXCELLENT is Your Name!

The Name of the Lord represents His character, His power - the essence of Who He is.

The Hebrew word for name is shem (shem), meaning "name, renown, fame, memorial, character." The Name of the Lord is SO important that His Name, Yahweh (Lord) is often referred to by the Jews as ha-shem, or The Name!

This intrigues me.

Do you see how powerful this is? We could refer to the Lord as hashem, meaning The Name, and its meaning would embody Who our God is and what we need Him to be at that moment. We must not take The Name of the Lord lightly! Whichever Name He reveals to us at any given moment is vital to understanding Who He is.

In Genesis 13:4, "Abram CALLED on the Name of the Lord."

When Moses was speaking to the Israelites about obedience versus disobedience, he very clearly said, "...that you may fear this glorious and awesome Name, THE LORD YOUR GOD." (Deuteronomy 28:58, the Lord capitalized it, not me.)

Consider some of these Names of the Lord:

El Shaddai - The All-sufficient One
El Elyon - The God Most High
El Olam - The Everlasting God
Adonai - Master
Jehovah-Jireh - The Lord Will Provide
Elohim - The Creator
El Roi - The God Who Sees
Jehovah-Rapha - The Lord Who Heals

And my all time favorite, "I AM THAT I AM"; "I AM everything you need Me to be."

Is our God magnificent, or what?

Just to speak The Name - hashem...

O Lord our Lord how EXCELLENT is Your Name!

Adonai, Your Name truly is excellent! It is to be exalted above all the earth! Your Name is a tower where we can run and be safe. It is THE Name - hashem - above all names. We love You, Lord. Thank You for opening our eyes that we might see. Praise You, Father!
