It Is Finished!

"So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is Finished!' And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit."
(John 19:30)

What is finished?

God's remarkable work of redemption - cleansing, forgiveness of sin, clothing us with the robe of righteousness so that a Holy God can abide with His children.

Jesus had completed the perfect sacrifice for the atonement of our sins - FOREVER!

OK. Get ready...this will blow your socks off! I learned the following morsel of delight from Beth Moore.

As we know, the Old Testament is filled with religious laws which, by the way, Jesus came to fulfill. One such set of laws is found in Leviticus 6:8-13 which gives Aaron and the priests instructions for the burnt offerings which took place upon the altar of sacrifice in the Tabernacle. This altar, symbolically, is a type of Christ.

The burnt offerings were for the atonement of sins.

Each evening the priests were commanded to kill and burn an evening sacrifice to God - one that was perfect, without blemish. God commanded them to let it burn upon the altar all night. Before dawn, the priests would rise and wait at the altar for the last of the ashes to fall through the bronze grate beneath the altar. "Ancient Hebrew history records that the moment the last ash fell, the priests blew the trumpets in celebration, shouting, 'It is finished!' (Beth Moore, A Woman's Heart: God's Dwelling Place)

Did you catch that? Can I hear a Whoop-Whoop?!!

"...the moment the last ash fell, the priests blew the trumpets in celebration, shouting, "IT IS FINISHED!!"

That takes my breath away.

The priests tending to the Tabernacle in the wilderness shouted the same words as Jesus when the atoning work of redemption was completed. The only difference is that the priests had to offer these sacrifices daily. Jesus paid our debts once and for all.

Hallelujah! It is finished!!

Praise God.

Lord, the only word that comes to mind is, "Amazing!" It thrills my soul to see how the Old Testament and the New Testament are connected. You are truly an awesome God! I love You, Lord and I love Your Word! And I praise You for Your atoning work upon the cross. Thank You for finishing the work that allows us to dwell with You. I give You praise, honor and glory.
