The Name of the Lord

"The Name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe."
(Proverbs 18:10)

"The NAME of the Lord is a strong tower." What does this mean? How could something concerning protection be so simple?

God's Name represents exactly Who He is. Throughout the Bible, He identifies Himself with different names which reflect the many aspects of His character. Depending upon our need, the Lord reveals Himself by a name which satisfies that need.

For instance: Are you familiar with the name El Shaddai? In Genesis 17 God and Abram entered into covenant. God told Abram, "I am El Shaddai - God Almighty." El Shaddai means that the Lord is all-sufficient, a life-sustainer. Whenever you see the words, 'God Almighty' or 'Almighty God', it is translated El Shaddai.

Another example? Jehovah-Jireh means, "I am the Lord Who provides". God told Abraham that Jehovah-Jireh was His Name when He provided the ram as a sacrifice in place of Isaac. (Genesis 22)

There are many more examples, but the point is that "the Name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous shall run to it and be safe."

The Name of the Lord - the Name ABOVE ALL Names!

Not only is there strength, or provision, or grace - or whatever we need at the moment - His Name is high and lifted up like a tower on a fortress. When we run to Him and call upon His Name, He lifts us up securely on high - with Him - high above our enemy.

Call upon His Name. Run to Him as fast as you can. He promises to answer you, to lift you securely above the fray.

Our God is faithful.

Lord, what a wonderful lesson to learn. When we call upon your Name, we are safe, we are lifted high above our enemy. A mighty fortress is our God!! Thank you, Lord.
